A Case Report of Aplastic Anemia caused by Aurothioglucose Therapy

Abstract
This report describes a 34 year old white woman with a 3 year history of non-nodular rheumatoid arthritis who developed aplastic anemia caused by Aurothioglucose (Solganal).
She was admitted to the Dept. of Internal Medicine, Cincinnati General Hospital(U.S.A.) on June 14, 1971 with chief complaint of uterine bleeding of 3 weeks duration. 3 days before entry, hemorrhagic tendency as gingival bleeding and purpura in extremities developed.
The peripheral blood showed severe pancytopenia with lymphocytosis. The marrow materials obtained on sternal and iliac punctures consisted of marked hypocellularity. The majority of the nucleated cells in the marrow were lymphocytes and plasma cells.
Intensive medical care, including blood transfusion, prednisone, B.A.L. and. bone marrow transplantation, was ineffective to improve hematological abnormalities or to control bleeding tendency.
Subdural hematoma and cerebral hemorrhage were developed on the 4th hospital day and she died on the 5th hospital day.
